Guys a little help please , some of us that are building the smaller version are attempting to bash it to a more respectable scale .
Can you please let me know your thoughts on these Trappet plans wheel pods, do they look too large or is that the kit is really small .

Yes, the spats on the Phoenix 74" span Lysander are too small as is the landing gear & wheels.

Did you get the Spats for the 70" span Duncan Hutson plans, or did you buy the spats for the 81" span Dennis Bryant model?
Both are on the same website.

Thank Scott, I purchased the ones for the 70" Dunkin plans so they are close enough I was just surprised on how small the stock spats are in the kit.
I have figure out how to scratch build the gear legs that will work with these units.

~265mm Mine is currently mounted, but the CF baffle plate I ordered in 265mm diameter was a snug fit...

Hi everyone, I purchased a kit at a swap meet back in January. It was being sold by a new Sig dealer in the Milwaukee area (Leo Spychalla). I did some of the modifications that others have described in this thread. I installed a ring on the cowl to eliminate external fasteners. The machine screws i use to mount the cowl come in from the rear since the firewall is accessible behind the cowl flaps. I also didn't like the pull-pull for the rudder so i mounted a hitec metal gear servo in the tailwheel well. Reinforcing of structure where servo mounts was needed. Works well.

any word on canopies? Either from Sig or anyone who is fabricating one?

Also anyone know where i can get rails to make the rear part of the canopy slide down the fuselage.

Great to hear about your kit!
I've flown with Herr Spychalla many time over the years at our Warbirds & Classics Alliance events. (I miss his Bates F4U FG fuselage!)
Back to the Lizzie;

• I used a lighter & more robust tailwheel myself that looks more scale as well. I used a DS821 servo at the forward location with a wire pushrod controlling the tailwheel steering.
• I ordered a Spare Canopy and Spats from SIG through my LHS in December and again in February. It seems that they had misplaced the order or something. I'm told it was supposed to arrive with the April container. No word yet.
• Paul Flemming & Galen B have a buddy in the NW who was going to make a thicker & more scale canopy but he had life disruptions (move?) and won't be looking at it for several months.
• Tom at TnT Landing Gear has made an excellent set of heavier aluminum gear legs that fit well in the Spats and give a good mounting for the winglets if you choose to build them.
• I'm not going to worry about canopy rails as I'm going to mount my rear canopy either OPEN (screwed down) or CLOSED (screwed down).

I'm hoping to fly mine at Warbirds over Michigan the first weekend of June. Will you be there?

thanks for the info. Since i am going to put a pilot figure in the rear with two machine guns then I too will screw the rear canopy to the fuselage.

i am using a Saito fg 60-r3 three cyl radial.

i am in the Milwaukee area but will not be at the Michigan event. I plan on bringing it to Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest in Fond Du Lac in August.

were you at the scale event at Owatonna a few years ago? My friend Jerry and I entered team scale with a Morane Saulnier.

Have not heard any flight reports since the first early flights. We have made several adjustment since our first unsuccessful maiden. All is repaired enough for a maiden this Thursday. Removed 5 degrees of positive stab incidence and relocated CG 2-1/4" measured from front face of fixed canopy frame. This is not quit the full amount the the new Phoenix 126" Lysander but agrees with our CG calculator. Will add more elevator throw on dual rates if needed. Will update results.
We did add a new set of landing gear made by a friend. Wheel pants are left off and will be added back along with new paint at patched areas, if we have a successful flight. Landing gear area had to be rebuilt due to damage and has a removable hatch for gear access.

Thursday should be interesting!

I had some trouble with my FG60-R3 as #2 won't fire. Had to replace it with another engine.
I then had to rebalance the aircraft by moving the flight batteries and ignition battery back under the wing. Using a 16ounce RotoFlow tank so I should be able to get 20 minutes per tank.

We finally made the second flight today with all repairs and modifications made. Zero incidence on stab & wing. Moved CG back (2-1/4" from canopy former) by adding 8 oz at tail wheel. Made cross bracket to secure weight.
Added more elevator control to 1".
Also went to cap screws to replace set screws with flats on tail shaft to prevent tail wheel from rotating on shaft.
Howard did the test flight, thank goodness or it would not have survived. Still earned his reputation as one of the best around.
Changes made did improve flying qualities a lot but it is still a handful to fly, but at least it now flares. Flaps without reducing throttle to a bit above idle sent her vertical in a heartbeat. Thought Howard was trying some of his 3D stuff.
Very pitch sensitive but did not show any tail heavy tendencies other than sensitivity.
She does flare now but did not want to settle in due to strong head wind.
We are going to remove 4 oz. from tail and try again.

Verdict at this point: This plane is not for the faint of heart. We purchased with intent to have a nice looking Warbird with gentle flying characteristics! Wooo-Dogees what a surprise!

Fellow club member summed it up best: "Successful" being the key word. Howard can fly anything.

I guess we could eventually become Lysander cult heroes if you consider all the fiddling and re-engineering we did to eventually pull this off? At least we proved that ALL incidences and the CG were bogus even though we're still fine-tuning the CG. I'm proud to have my name associated with this funky flight :-)

I am building the smaller 74" version and will be adding the small vertical fins ( for lack of the correct term) behind the leading edge in alignment with the alerons.
According to a recent AMA mag article certain type wings can benift from this addition because they add lift and would make the wing tip less prone to stall.
Do you think the larger version could benifit with these additional mods ?

Should benefit as the wing has so much taper I would think it would help reduce tip stall& add lift. Worth trying. I would like to see your design efforts, as you have a great track record from previous post I have read of yours. Thanks for input.

Thank you, as always your a class act and I also appreciate your valuable threads !
I have attached some of the examples I am evaluating. I think they will virtually disappear on the camo wing so scale equity can be maintained while potentially increasing stability.
I was able to find the correct name "vortex generators", I think the AMA magazine that featured the story was approx March/April edition. As soon I secure the best type for the smaller Lysander I will be posting pics

I picked up my new plane Tuesday from Sig its a awesome looking plane.
I have the wheel pants on I put the new landing gear on from TNT and I have tail wheel mounted with the servo in the back

We have successfully debugged our Lysander and now it flys great. Having examined the built in engineering defects it has been determined by our own authorized flying committee that it was the RUSSIANS that obliviously Interfered in the original design decisions.

I bought this bag: Wing Bags Detail

It's for biplanes, but it has enough compartments so that it holds the wings, the struts, the wing tube, the stab tube, the stabs, and several spare props... Needless to say I think it is perfect!

I have attached a couple of pics (they're not great, but they do show how I pack the wings and struts).
