Evening clue. Thanks; Ernie P.

What warbird do I describe?

Clues:

1. This plane was a little too late to make it to the front.

2. It flew during the war, and orders were placed; but didn’t make it into production until after the war.

3. It was FAST. As in, the fastest of its type and day.

4. It was a biplane.

5. The prototype had ailerons on both wings.

6. It performed quite well in tests; but could not achieve the required service ceiling.

7. So, it was redesigned with a larger wingspan.

8. The revised plane had ailerons on the lower wing only.

9. The revised plane met the required service ceiling and was put into production.

10. It was a very popular aircraft.

11. This plane served with the armed forces of at least ten (10) different countries.

12. It was purchased and used by other countries as a “pattern” for their own aircraft.

13. It was built by the designing company; and produced under license by several other companies in its home country.

14. It was also produced in other countries under license.

You nailed it, FlyerInOKC; the Nieuport-Delage NiD.29 it is. Congratulations, and you are now up. The Nieuport-Delage NiD.29 was a really great aircraft, although one which is rarely mentioned. It was perhaps the last of the great French warbirds; much studied and copied and utilized by many different air forces around the world. Thanks; Ernie P.

22. The original production fighter was the fastest in the world.

23. The original production fighter had a range of over 350 miles.

24. The first batch of pre-production aircraft were ordered in August of 1918.

Answer: The Nieuport-Delage NiD.29

The Nieuport-Delage NiD.29 was a French single-seat biplane fighter (C.I category) designed and built by Nieuport-Delage for the French Air Force. The NiD.29 was an equal-span biplane with ailerons on both upper and lower wings. It had a fixed tailskid landing gear, a nose-mounted engine and a single open cockpit for the pilot. The prototype NiD 29 was evaluated by the French Air Force in July 1918 and a pre-production batch was ordered on 21 August 1918. It was powered by a Hispano-Suiza 8Fb engine piston engine, it performed well in test but could not achieve the required ceiling. The second prototype was modified with an increased wingspan and on achieving the required ceiling it was ordered into production in 1920, becoming the fastest service fighter in the world at that time. Production aircraft did not have ailerons on the upper wing and the lower wing ailerons were increased in size. The first mass production deliveries were made in 1922 to the French Air Force and the type was popular although it did have a tendency to enter a flat spin. The French military bought 250 aircraft which were built by Nieuport and seven other companies. The Ni-D 29 was to become an important fighter in the 1920s with purchases of 30 by Spain (including 10 Spanish licence built aircraft), 108 by Belgium (87 licensed built by SABCA). The Italian Regia Aeronautica bought 175 aircraft including 95 built by Macchi as the Macchi-Nieuport 29 and 80 built by Caproni. Sweden bought nine aircraft and designated them J 2. The Japanese company Nakajima bought a pattern aircraft and built 608 for the Imperial Japanese Army as the Ko-4. Racing versions of the aircraft were developed and they gained eight world speed records and won the 1920 Gordon Bennett Trophy and the 1922 Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe competition. Three NiD 29s were modified for reserve Captain Joseph Sadi-Lecointe in November 1925 and used on seventy sorties against insurgents in Morocco using bomb racks with six 10 kg bombs.[3] Spanish aircraft were also involved in similar operations in North Africa.

What warbird do I describe?

1. I found this airplane while researching the presiding aircraft.

2. Like it this Warbird was used by multiple nations besides the one that developed it.

3. This Wardbird was designed during one war but didn't go into production until that war ended.

I am going to be away from the computer for most of the rest of today so I will post the evening clue now. If I do get the chance I will check back for a guess if not I will be back in the AM. Good luck!\\ What Warbird do I describe?

1. I found this airplane while researching the preceding aircraft.

2. Like it this Warbird was used by multiple nations besides the one that developed it.

3. This Wardbird was designed during one war but didn't go into production until that war ended.

4. It's a monoplane.

5. Because of the length of it's career the airplane was given the nickname, a name which it shares with a successful fighter from a previous war.

6. The original engine used by this airplane was shared with a famous air racer.

7. The crew size was primarily a single pilot however variants were built with a larger crew.

8. Over this Warbird's career it had a very large number of variants that reached production in both large and small numbers.

9. This Warbird is a piston aircraft.

10. The airplane this Warbird replaced, both developed under the same specification, was so troublesome it lasted in frontline service for only 2 years.

How about the Gourdou-Leseurre GL.2, which, after two years, replaced its predecessor Gourdou-Leseurre Type A? Thanks; Ernie P.

The Gourdou-Leseurre GL.2 (originally, the Gourdou-Leseurre Type B) was a French fighter aircraft which made its maiden flight in 1918. The GL.2 was a development of the Gourdou-Leseurre Type A which had shown pleasing performance during testing but which had been ultimately rejected by the Aéronautique Militaire due to concerns about the rigidity of the wing. The Type B featured not only a new wing design, now braced by four struts on either side in place of the two per side on the Type A, but also a revised fin and rudder for improved directional stability, and strengthened undercarriage. Twenty examples were delivered in November 1918, designated GL.2C.1 in service, but the end of the war meant a loss of official interest.

Gourdou-Leseurre continued development anyway, and by 1920 had an improved version, designated GL.21 or B2 ready for exhibition at the Paris Salon de l'Aéronautique that year. This differed from the GL.2 mostly in having revised ailerons and a batch of twenty were purchased by the Aéronautique Militaire, with another one being purchased by Finland for evaluation.

Two years later, a further revision of the design appeared as the GL.22 or B3. This featured a redesigned wing of greater span, and modified horizontal stabiliser and landing gear. This proved to be a moderate success for Gourdou-Leseurre, selling to the Aéronautique Maritime as the GL.22C.1, as well as Finland, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Latvia, and Yugoslavia. This was followed by a small series of test aircraft designated GL.23 or B4 before manufacture of the GL.22 resumed in an unarmed version known internally to the company as the B5 and purchased by both the Aéronautique Militaire and Aéronautique Maritime as the GL.22ET.1 for use as an advanced trainer (Ecole de Transition). One of these aircraft was used for trials aboard the aircraft carrier Béarn.

The GL.24 version was produced in small numbers in 1925 for various trial purposes, including one two-seat trainer conversion, and one air ambulance (TSTransport Sanitaire) exhibited at an international medical conference held in Paris that year.

The GL.2 was also used as a display aircraft, with Gourdou-Leseurre test pilot André Christiany flying one to win the speed trial in the 1923 Coupe Michelin, and two ET.1s painted in the tricolore giving displays throughout France and North Africa the same year. Even well into the 1930s, specialised aerobatic versions were produced as the B6 and B7 for Jérôme Cavalli and Fernand Malinvaud respectively, with a second B7 built for Adrienne Bolland.
