Dihedral is generally measured along the center line of the leading edge rather than against the bottom surface of the wing. Based on that the listed dihedral for the Mustang in all of my resources...

Just FYI, the Mustang has 5 degrees of dihedral per wing panel, or 10 degrees total. Thus 6 total degrees of dihedral is still substantially short of the scale amount.

From what I have come across in my research this may be something of an urban legend. Some sources report that the reason for the dorsal fin was actually to strengthen the vertical fin attachment...

Better late then never but, FYI, the deceased pilot could hardly be called a novice and these guys were NOT landing in formation.
