Years ago on my first TF P-51 I tried landing without flaps also. Not good! The plane either floated or bounced to it's landing. Finally got mad and dropped full flaps and wonderful landings...

All my later TF P-51's have the fixed tail wheel....and less nose weight also.
I have never heard any of my friends say, "your tail wheel is still down?'
I also use one...

Heating issues....Place a tin dam on the engine stand-offs to stop overheating the carburetor and causing the engine to go lean.. Zip tied through punched holes.
I do have a small "slot" in the top...

Makes a good hand hold also if you leave a half...

I have found when the wheels are "up" in the locked position you need to be able to turn the wheel while in the well.
Maybe not "spin" but at least be able turn it.

Don't forget you have covering to be placed in their yet. That will take up some room.
You will want a little space in there placing the wing on the fuselage. I always tilt the back of the wing up...

Another thing about landings is that wing better be producing "some" lift at touch down or she will balance for sure.
If that means adding power the last foot or so.....I think that is the reason...

You can't see it......but that new wood goes clear to the front of the leading edge where it meets a length of 1/8 ply epoxyed to the back of the leading edge.
Be carefull when drilling that front...

Plus I drill out the Robarts for bigger wood screws.
Something you can do even if the plane is already built.
