Personally, I'd like to trade about half my birthdays in on something.......anything. Oh, to be 27 again, and know what I know now. (Arguably, not much more than I did 27 years ago. )
What scale is that TBM? Big as the stab is, looks like you could ride in it. That's a serious spar, what does the main wing spar look like?

Ken, you said 27, heck, I'd take 40 years old and know what I know now. That would be awesome. O'well, enough of that pipe dream. The Avenger Mk. III is 1/6th scale, wing span will be 108 inches, and 40+ pounds. Ken, I'm not going back into that box to see what the wing spar looks like, you told me to finish my DAWG, I'm going to do just that; so stop tempting me. Hummm, I wonder just how large it is. What new tid bits have you found out on the Mk. III?? Chic

Chic, found a couple of color pics similar to the scheme in the photo you posted earlier. The only "problem" is that they are of a MkII, or TBM-1C, which has the concealed tailhook as well as some other external differences to the MkIII, or TBM-3E that you want to do.
According to some of the accompanying literature, the squadron these planes were part of were assigned to "clear" the English Channel during the Overlord Invasion (D-Day). They'd still look good.

Ken, I know I can depend on you for tips, advice, knowledge, and out the box assistance. The Lend-Lease Program between the Brits and the US was valuable to them but I have never found where we used other countries aircraft. Any one have anything to share on that topic of a reverse Lend/Lease Program during the war? Hey "rustypep" I'll be using a BME 115 that is being freshened up by BME as we speak. Lots of room in the Avenger cowl.

Chic, This is only speculation on my part, but I can't think of any aircraft built by other countries that the US used during WWII. The only thing that comes to mind off the top of my head was the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, but most of those used by us were license built by US mfg's. The reason for both situations is simple. We were by far the largest country (Russia notwithstanding) with the greatest resources, technology, and industrial infrastructure and manpower. The other Allied countries were hard-pressed to build sufficient weaponry to take the war to the Axis prior to our entry, and could barely provide enough for defense. The Russians were technologically far behind before the beginning of the war and into the early part of it, but rapidly began catching up. Most of their own wartime production went for their own use.

What is the diameter of that cowl? That does look huge. Is the stab a plug in?

Hey Rustypep, your right, the cowl is huge. The front opening is approx. 7 3/4" in diameter, the rear opening is approx. 11 3/4" and the depth of the cowl (front to rear) is 7 1/2". Your going to get me in trouble with KH "MAKING" me go look into the Avenger goody box. No the stab is not a plug in but I do intend on changing the plans by making the elevators one piece with the control horn internal vs. having two external control horns on the elevator halves. Well Ken, rrudytoo and R8893, the history lessons are great reading for this school teacher. Ken your logic is solid with regards to the status and technology of the other Allies. But you gentlemen have certainly given some great ideas to other builders following this thread. "So much" "So Many" "So Few" Hey, I'm going to print that phrase out and hang it in my workshop. Speaking of workshop, let me go get some more sandpaper.

OK, rustypep, let me ask you a personal question. Have you lost your mind, a RCS 150. Do you know how many birthdays I would have to have at the same time to get the money necessary to purchase a $3500 motor? That kind of money for an 8 Hp motor vs. 12 Hp from the BME 115. Hummm, I have to agree with you, it would sound awful good in that deep cowl. Stop teasing me, I'm leaving those boxes alone. Your trying to get me in trouble with Ken.

My only beef with radials is the cost per cylinder. $700 per jug is a bit much, no matter how good it sounds.

haha...and the 150 is the cheap one. I might go for one someday when my building skills are worthy of it. I am not interested in Jets. If you are going to be overpowered anyway than what is a little more HP...right? I don't know much about this kit. Has anyone competed with one? I am just curious how well it would static The shape of that stab looks pretty scale.

Hey Ken, how are ya. Do something so that I'll also get back fully into the shop. As you said before, I'm grading papers tooooo much. Also, I'm going out on a limb here by saying I believe BME originally stood for Beam Mounted Engine. And the BME115 is 115cc's not ci's. Don't ask me where all that power comes from - but I'll take it. Two more papers to grade, bye.

WOW what a beautiful site, Ok, I'll share what I'm looking at. I'm looking at my BME 115/116 that I just rec'd back from BME tonight. It has been refreshed, cleaned up, bench run, adjusted, and returned with a new ignition system. I'm putting it back into its box until I can ligitimately return to the construction of my Avenger. I want to welcome another Avenger builder to this build thread, TCCJFK, welcome and please jump on in. Can't wait to hear from you with hints and ideas. Hey, "Rustypep", I'm hiding the engine box along with the rest of the parts boxes I'm collecting. O, yes, forgot to say, Glennis emailed me with the fact that my wheels should be done next week. Hi Kelly, I see a Thunderbolt lover, me too, a Meister P-47 Razorback is number 3 in the que after the Avenger and Cessna Bobcat builds. I talked to Tom, one of the new owners of BME who refreshed my engine and he said BME now stands for Best Model Engine. I told him, if it is powering my Avenger, you better believe it is. Chic

Ok chic Im trying to get the hang of this. Enclosed are some pictures of whats going on with my Avenger I am converting the Bob Holman struts to fit the bigger Avenger and still in the process of cutting the kit out,Hey its a hobby no stress.

Looking good TCCJFK, can tell your a real craftsman through your cutting the ribs and formers out by hand. Glad you can convert the Holman gear for the larger Avenger. I will start on the tail feathers, what section will you be working on? Welcome aboard as those Navy types would say. Smile. Chic
