Your kidding yourself if you think those little Unitraks retracts and long
struts will support that big plane. Most of the ones that have been built
so far are over 38#. If you don't go with what the Designer recommends,
at least use a retract and strut of proportional size.
Just my opinion of course.

I think I will beable to make carrier landing with them.The diameter not the same but I think they will hold up, they are made of aviation stainless steel Tubing not aluminum like the original ones.

WOW what a beautiful site, Ok, I'll share what I'm looking at. I'm looking at my BME 115/116 that I just rec'd back from BME tonight. It has been refreshed, cleaned up, bench run, adjusted, and returned with a new ignition system. I'm putting it back into its box until I can ligitimately return to the construction of my Avenger. I want to welcome another Avenger builder to this build thread, TCCJFK, welcome and please jump on in. Can't wait to hear from you with hints and ideas. Hey, "Rustypep", I'm hiding the engine box along with the rest of the parts boxes I'm collecting. O, yes, forgot to say, Glennis emailed me with the fact that my wheels should be done next week. "Rustypep", I do not have room for all of these Avenger parts boxes. Smile. However, it is tempting. Chic

OK "rustypep", I have to admit your right, I am running out of excuses. Ken, the DAWG is 90% sanded, it is steady raining here, maybe I'll work a bit on the Avenger. Just a bit. Will post photos of what I was able to do later this evening. Chic

OK guys, and sorry Ken, but it is still raining pretty hard here. I could not go outside to sand on the "DAWG" and my eye caught that unfinished stabilizer sitting over in the corner all by itself. Sooooo, I looked at the plans and the written instructions by Charlie and whooooo, in a couple of ticks of the clock, a finished stabilizer and a pair of elevators came out of the cloud of balsa dust that I just let out the shops door. Just wanted to rough them into existence you know. It all looks pretty straight forward and pretty good so far. There will be a mod or two with agreement from the designer on the rudder placement and one piece elevator. Charlie recommends use of G-10 sheet f/glass like Frank Tiano sells so I will have to order it to help with the re-make of the rudder/elevator plywood hinges. I'm deciding what to do about the single 1/16" wire used to hinge the rudder. Maybe a nyrod/1/16" wire combo, a carbon rod/1/16" wire combo, or something like that. Charlie is smarted then I as the designer. He has a 14" piece of 1/16" wire that is sandwiched with balsa as the connecting hinge wire for the rudder. Plywood and G-10 serve as the hinges through which the wire passes through connecting the rudder fin with the rudder. I have seen Platt use the technique but as a scale building rookie, is there any chance of the 1/16" holes in the ply/glass hinges getting sloopy over time? Here are my first set of photos. Chic

I started with the center section, which required that I massage some of the laser cut parts from PCK, and am now getting the retracts/gear rails lined up. Not the easiest, as it has been mentioned in Hans' abandoned thread on RCSB. Since I don't have 3 sets of hands, I'm using modeler's clay to support the gear in the proper location (and up, off the building surface) so that I can appropriately adjust the slots in the ribs that accommodate the gear rails. This is one of the most important steps, so I am taking my time to make sure that the gear location exactly match the plans. I think that I got it all figured out now. Once the gear rails are set, the rest should be cake.
Give us an update.

definitely great to see a thread on one of my future builds. i also was glad to see the rcs 150 mentioned as sound is very important to me. seems a little weak for the plane though. how would the 215 or 250 fit?

I think that the cowl is not wide enough for the larger of the two radials (even though it's likely tall and deep enough). I already explored the RCS 150 route, and even that motor is a little too large. According to my measurements, the cowl is about 1/2" too narrow for the RCS 150. Regarding power, I have no doubt that the 150 would fly the Avenger, but it certainly would not be a rocketship.... but then again, this is an Avenger we're talking about.
I hope someone out there goes the radial gasser route... I would love to hear that avenger on fly-by.
Well, the sun us coming up so it's officially OK to start the power tools in the in garage (i.e. get back to work on my Kellogg Avenger).

the sound of a RCS/Moki radial 250 on a hi speed low pass is astounding. it adds so much more to a warbird. a single cylinder gasser on a well done warbird just doesn't do it for me. i guess one could always enlarge the plans to fit a 150/215/250 radial.

I have been asked about the RCS radial fitting into the cowling. I checked the dimension sheet on their site and see that the 150 it is 10" in diameter and 8.5" long. Attached are some photos to help answer the question. The stick is 10" long and fits well into the cowling. The engine mounting box is long enough that it could be adjusted to accept the longer engine. The RCS engine weighs 9.48 pounds. The 3W engine weighs only 4.75 pounds and I needed 21 oz of nose weight to bring the CG to the correct location. This leaves 3.6 pounds of additional nose weight with the RCS engine. The plane will have no problem flying at this additional weight. You might need to move batteries back to the CG location and possibly some additional tail weight. Since I do not have a redial engine I do not know how the power compares to the 3W75. The cost of the engine is another issue.

Great hearing from you Ken, - again, you'll be blessed. That DAWG will get built. Too cold to paint or sand outside so I heard the Avenger calling me. I worked on finishing the elevators, no real change in the photos already posted. However, I worked on the fin and the rudder. Shown is the ribs and scrap supports glued in. Since I wanted to have an internal elevator horn, I asked Charlie for assistance. Another gentleman had done the same thing to one of Charlie's Avengers. Charlie suggested moving the rudder hinges back 1/2" and extending the length of the hinges an extra 1/2" to move the rudder back 1/2". So I decided to add some wood to the back of the fin post and remake and extend the hinges. Charlie also suggest adding G-10 F/glass to the ply rudder hinges. Being former military, I do as I'm told. Smile.

Photos show the 1/16" wire, rudder hinge pin, centered on the rudder and the I believe 3/32" supports on both sides of the wire. Also shown is the trial fit of the rudder hinges which will have a 1/16" hole drilled to accept the wire pin.

Hummm, RCS Showcase, home of the radial engines, is about 30 mins down the road from me. I wonder if there is a discount for school teachers or if Andy Kane can get me a discount, or if Charlie can ....... or if ..........? Enough.

i thought i did. i started looking at this kit over 2 yrs ago with the intent of doing a radial powered warbird. i've only recently found out it might not work. which is a good excuse for not being able to afford 1 anyway[sm=teeth_smile.gif].

WHOOOOOO, look what I found on my doorstep today. I'm terribly happy, I have such a smile on my face that I look like a "mouse" who lives in a cheese factory. Dennis (Glennis Wheels), so many, many thanks for a beautiful set of scale wheels for my TBM Avenger. They are absolutely the real deal. Even the tail wheel looks like it has skidded across the carrier deck a number of times. So very well worth the wait. It is scheduled to be raining all weekend so looks like I'll get to work on the Avenger and not painting the DAWG. Chic

Thanks again - some of this stuff is hard to let go of, makes me want to take it home and sit it up on the bar rail.
I had to climb through a lot of stuff at the museum work shop to get the the wingless Avenger, but that documentation really pays off in the end in duplicating "ugly" wheels. Wish I had spent a little more time looking at those wing hinges - might have to go back.
